A Gorgeous Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Covered Jar / Ginger Jar richly decorated in the classic palette of iron red and cobalt blue on a white ground. The design features a vibrant scene of blossoming cherry branches with stylised floral panels and geometric borders - a beautiful example of traditional Imari ware artistry from the Meiji period (circa 1890–1910).

The jar’s domed lid with a pointed knop finial mirrors the body’s decorative motifs, completing its balanced and elegant form. A timeless piece of Japanese porcelain that brings both beauty and heritage to any interior – circa 1880.

FAQs

Imari porcelain, originating from the Arita region of Japan, is named after the port from which it was exported. It is recognised for its distinct palette featuring underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and subtle gilded detailing, frequently depicting floral, botanical, or panelled compositions.

Crafted from kaolin-rich clay, these ceramics underwent a multi-stage firing process. The cobalt blue decoration was applied to the unglazed body and fired at high temperatures, after which iron-red enamels and gold accents were painted over the glaze and fired a second time in a low-temperature kiln.

Authentic pieces from the Meiji era display subtle hand-painted variations in line weight, slight iron specks or firing kilns marks in the clay body, and unglazed rims where lids rest. The underside often reveals a smooth glazed base with an unglazed foot rim consistent with traditional Japanese kiln placement.

An Imari jar functions as a structural focal point when placed on a sideboard, fireplace mantelpiece, or console table. Its cobalt blue and rust red palette complements traditional dark timber furniture as well as neutral contemporary interiors requiring patterned visual interest.

To protect delicate overglaze enamels and gilded highlights, clean the surface using a dry, soft-bristled brush or a microfiber cloth. Avoid immersion in water, chemical cleansers, or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can compromise surface gilding over time.
