French Grand Sonnerie Date Work Moon-phase Carriage Clock 1870 Restored

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale an a1870s French striking and repeating Grand sonnerie with date work and alarm plus moon -phase carriage clock made in France ,the clock case has been fully restored the movement has also been fully restored with new springs added and is running strong keeping time and striking correctly with the repeat button on the top all running via the original again restored silvered platform.

Again this clock was restored by Peter Bonnett before his sad passing.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny gilt brass and stands 21cm high x 10cm wide with a depth of 9cm it is in original condition with a thick 5mm beveled front/back door and top viewing glass again all in mint condition.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

At the base is the lever for silent or quarters or grand Sonnerie all working correctly.

The Dial

The dial is in mint original condition in white porcelain with Roman numerals; the clock also retains its original very fine black hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strike which strikes the hours, quarters and halves and three quarters via two blue steel gongs to the rear also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been fully restored and running and striking 100% correctly.

This clock also has a fully functional alarm and date work.

The clock also contains Genre stop work to stop over winding a top-quality feature only found on top-end clocks.

At the bottom of the case is a lever for full striking or just hour striking or Silent so you have all three options.

The photos do not do justice to this lovely old clock.

As with all my clocks, this one is sold with a ‘back-to-base’ 3-month guarantee. I also offer future clock servicing, which I carry out personally at a heavily discounted rate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Grand Sonnerie carriage clock is a high-grade 19th-century portable clock featuring a complex striking mechanism that chimes the hour and the quarter-hour at every quarter, often incorporating full calendar and moon phase functions.

These clocks are predominantly constructed from solid brass casesfrequently gilded or lacqueredfitted with bevelled glass panels, steel movement arbours, and enamel dials.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast brass construction, finely enamelled dials, hand-engraved plates, original platform escapements, and maker marks or serial numbers stamped on the back movement plate.

A brass carriage clock functions as an accent piece on a fireplace mantelpiece, styled alongside framed artwork, or placed on an office desk or bookshelf.

Keep the case dust-free using a dry microfiber cloth, avoid harsh chemical brass polishes that strip original gilding, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
