Description

This is a late Victorian engraved double series opaque twist stem schnapps or cordial glass dating from the late 19th century, and made by the Josphinenhütte glassworks in the Black Forest in Germany.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 100+ years of use.

FAQs

Opaque twist wine glasses feature intricate enamel threads encased within the clear glass stem, a technique popularized in 18th and 19th-century European glassmaking.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead crystal or flint glass, shaped by glassblowers using specialized tools to twist opaque white or coloured enamel rods inside the stem.

Authentic pieces often exhibit small imperfections such as pontil marks on the base, tiny air bubbles within the glass matrix, and natural wear patterns consistent with age.

Displaying period glassware inside glass-fronted cabinets or on open shelving allows light to pass through the intricate stems, highlighting their craftsmanship as sculptural accents.

Antique glass should be washed exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and abrasive sponges to protect the delicate surface.
