Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ruby overlay glass, also termed flashed or casing glass, refers to glass produced by fusing a layer of ruby-coloured glass onto a clear glass base. The technique gained widespread popularity in Britain and Europe during the Victorian era, particularly between 1850 and 1890, for decorative table glass and goblets.

Victorian glassmakers created overlay glass by gathering clear lead crystal and dipping or casing it in a molten layer of coloured glass, often tinted using copper or gold salts. Once cooled, artisan glass cutters used copper wheels to carve decorative patterns through the red layer, revealing the transparent crystal underneath.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit slight variations in hand-cut facets, pontil marks or star-cut bases, and heavy lead crystal weight. The wheel-engraved motifs typically depict period-appropriate patterns such as grapevines, leaves, or geometric cuts, showing microscopic wear on the foot rim.

Coloured glassware can be displayed on illuminated glass shelves, sideboards, or dressed dining tables where light can pass through the cut sections. Grouping ruby glass with complementary period glass or clear crystal creates visual contrast within modern or traditional display cabinets.

Hand wash antique glassware individually in lukewarm water using a mild liquid soap and a non-abrasive soft cloth. Avoid dishwashers and extreme temperature changes, which cause thermal shock, and dry thoroughly with a lint-free towel.
