Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of southern Kyushu during the late sixteenth century. By the nineteenth-century Meiji period, production expanded significantly to produce decorated earthenware vessels featuring intricate gilding and figures aimed primarily at Western export markets.

Satsuma pottery is crafted from a light-coloured earthenware clay body sealed with a clear, finely crackled glaze. Artisans applied raised enamels, iron-red pigments, and gold paste or gold leaf to execute detailed figurative and geometric designs.

Authentic pieces feature a ceramic body covered in a fine network of crackle glazing, known as craquelure. They typically display hand-painted enamelling, detailed gilding, and frequently carry makers marks or signatures written in Japanese characters on the underside.
