Longcase clocks emerged in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases. They evolved through various stylistic periods, reflecting the craftsmanship and design trends of their respective eras.

These clocks were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, walnut, or pine, often featuring brass dials, lead weights, and intricate steel or brass movement components.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the dovetail joints, hand-cut screws, the ageing of the wood, maker signatures on the dial, and ensuring the movement matches the period of the case.

An antique longcase clock serves as a striking focal point in a contemporary space, functioning well when contrasted against minimalist walls or paired with mid-century and transitional furniture styles.

Preservation involves keeping the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources, ensuring it stands on a level surface, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
