A fusee clock uses a conical pulley with a chain or cord to maintain equal tension on the mainspring as it unwinds, ensuring accurate timekeeping. This mechanism was widely used in British clockmaking from the 18th century through to the early 20th century.

These clocks typically feature solid timber cases made from mahogany, oak, or rosewood, housing a painted iron or brass dial protected by a heavy glass bezel set within a brass or wooden rim.

Authentication involves inspecting the fusee movement for hand-cut teeth and quality engraving, checking the dial for signs of age such as hair-cracks on painted iron, and verifying the makers signature against known historical records.

An antique wall clock serves as a strong focal point when mounted on a plain, neutral wall, allowing its traditional craftsmanship to contrast effectively with modern minimalist furnishings.

Mechanical fusee clocks require regular professional servicing every three to five years to clean the gear train and renew lubricants, alongside careful handling and stable environmental conditions free from excessive moisture or direct sunlight.
