Georgian Rare Lynn Double Series Opaque Twist Wine Glass, Terraced Foot
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:The World is Made of Glass Ltd.
This is a rare Georgian, Lynn-moulded, English, double series opaque twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765. It is the second time this glass has passed through our hands.
The glass is in reasonable condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5.3 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is moulded with a graduated series of seven Lynn rings; the appellation arising from the belief that these distinctive glasses were blown in King''s Lynn, Norfolk. They have also been called Norfolk glasses in the past. The bowl sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of two pairs of thin enamel cords twisted around a central corkscrew. The stem ends in a terraced foot which measures 7.1 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14.4 cm (5.7 inches) in height. The... underside rim of the foot is chipped in a number of places although most do not impact on the outside edge and the glass still presents well. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an old collector''s sticker on the underside of the foot.
Lead glass weighing in at 130 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).
Provenance: With us in 2015, then in The Graham Slater Collection.
