Georgian Continental Polychrome Enamelled Schnapps Flask

18th century
Description

This is a mid-European (probably German) enamelled spirit flask dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The flask is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with over 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the base.

The flask is rectangular in shape with canted corners measuring 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in width, by 7 cm (2.8 inches) in depth and 18.5cm (7.4 inches) in height. The flask is polychrome enameled with displays of flowers to the broader sides. There are enamelled polychrome leaf fronds and flowers on the narrower sides between circular motifs on the corners and a red, white and yellow enamelled band to the top of the flask, which is topped off by a pewter cap at the neck. There are no chips, cracks, or any obvious evidence of restoration to the glass. There is some light rubbing of the enamel at certain points. There is no top to the cap.

It weighs 360 g. (~ 13 oz.).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Widespread across Central Europe during the eighteenth century, these glass flasks were produced to hold spirits such as schnapps and were decorated with hand-applied vitreous enamels depicting floral motifs and regional folk iconography.

These vessels were free-blown or mould-blown using soda-lime or potash glass, decorated with fused mineral enamels, and completed with a fitted pewter screw collar and cap.

Period examples display pontil marks on the base, hand-applied enamel with slight raised texture, age-related oxidation on the pewter mounts, and subtle irregularities inherent to historic hand-blown glass manufacture.

Position the flask on a sideboard top, bookshelf, or drinks trolley alongside vintage glass items where direct natural light highlights the translucency of the glass and the painted enamel detail.

Wipe surfaces gently using a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical liquids, submersion in warm water, or abrasive polishes that could lift delicate enamelling or discolour the pewter fitting.
