Description

A rare dome top coffer in oak with fine original decorative ironwork allowing for four locks to be fitted, this well constructed chest has plank construction with moulded decoration, the robust carrying handles suggest it was for transportation of valuables, the four lock hasps are likely to necessitate the presence of more than one person to open it. Sixteenth-century coffers are characterised by robust frame-and-panel construction, heavy iron straps or hinges, and simple architectural mouldings reflecting the utilitarian and secure storage needs of the period.

These pieces were typically crafted from native European hardwoods such as oak, elm, or pine, joined using pegged mortise and tenon joints, and reinforced with hand-forged ironwork.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetails or pegged joints, oxidized iron hardware with irregular hand-forged features, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with centuries of age.

A period coffer functions effectively as a grounding anchor in a living space, serving as a coffee table substitute, an entryway blanket box, or a textural contrast against minimalist modern walls.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber splitting, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the historic surface finish.
