A Fine Marine Chronometer by Haswell and Sons No.2923 with Interesting History

Description

A two day marine chronometer in the original brass bound mahogany case.

Purchased by the Admiralty in 1895, it was 27th in the annual trial of chronometers at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. It is listed as having a non magnetic white metal balance and spring, and a rare non-ferrous detent.

It was serving on a number of ships from 1895 until 1948 including (full list available):

HMS Jupiter

HMS Effingham

It then became part of the Blackwell collection in the USA and was sold on his behalf by David Penny

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.
