Burmese Specimen Chest

19th century
Description

An exceptional Burmese specimen chest, crafted from teak and richly adorned with intricate carvings, presented in excellent antique condition. The top is carvings are dominated by swirling vines and leaves, meticulously arranged to create a visually striking pattern. This lifts to reveal a compartmentalized storage section. The cupboard doors, embellished with religious figures within arched frames, open to reveal six short graduating drawers and two long drawers—perfect for storing trinkets or jewellery. The sides and base continue the theme of exquisite carvings, with additional depictions of deities at the centre of the panels, adding to the overall grandeur of the piece. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Burmese specimen chest is a compact storage cabinet, traditionally crafted from local hardwoods such as teak during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, designed to store collections, coins, or small valuables behind decorative doors.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid teak wood using traditional hand joinery methods, featuring deeply carved relief panels depicting mythological figures, local flora, and architectural arches.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved high relief work, traditional joinery techniques, native Burmese mythological motifs, and natural patination from age rather than uniform modern chemical stains.

A carved Burmese chest functions effectively as an accent piece atop a console table or side desk, introducing rich visual texture when paired with neutral modern decor or classic dark wood interiors.

Dust regularly using a soft bristle brush to clean within the intricate carving, position away from direct heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and treat periodically with beeswax to maintain timber hydration.
