Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This imposing nineteenth-century corner cabinet exhibits a Chinoiserie style with black lacquer, gold leaf, wood, and brass hardware. The upper section features an arched top profile above a double-door cupboard with four brass butterfly hinges, complemented by a double-door cupboard base below. Hand-painted gilded landscapes adorn the exterior, depicting warriors on horseback, lakeside buildings, and trees on a black lacquered surface, while decorative floral patterns embellish the outer panels and borders. The structure stands on bracket feet with intricate carved and moulded details framing the arched pediment and base. The item measures 224 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 64 cm deep. Positioned in a corner of a principal reception room, study, or hallway, the piece provides functional storage with internal shelving while serving as a prominent decorative element within an interior scheme.

FAQs

Chinoiserie furniture from the 19th century reflects European interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions, featuring hand-painted figures, landscapes, and flora in gilded paint over dark lacquered wooden surfaces.

These cabinets typically utilised softwoods or hardwoods coated with multiple layers of resin-based lacquer or shellac, decorated with gilding, and fitted with brass hinges and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related craquelure within the lacquer, hand-carved joinery on internal frames, hand-engraved brass hardware, and raised gilded decoration with subtle surface wear.

A Chinoiserie corner cabinet serves as a focal point in unused room corners, pairing well alongside neutral upholstery, brass accents, and minimalist contemporary art to balance the intricate gilding.

Preserve lacquer furniture by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding water or chemical solvent cleaners.
