Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pricket candlestick features a central vertical metal spike designed to hold a large candle securely in place by piercing its base. Historically common in ecclesiastical settings across Europe, prickets were designed to support tall pillar candles safely on church altars and shrines.

These decorative pieces were typically carved from timber and coated with a gesso layer before being finished with real silver leaf gilding. Iron or forged steel spikes were set into the top pan to support heavy wax candles, anchored by carved triform or tripodal bases.

Authentic 19th-century wooden prickets show natural signs of age, including craquelure, rubbing, or oxidisation to the silver leaf surface, along with original hand-carving marks. Inspect the spike for hand-forged characteristics and look for natural shrinkage cracks in the wood grain around turned sections.

Display a pair of tall pricket candlesticks symmetrically on a sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to add architectural height and sculptural interest. Their classical proportions and aged silver finish pair well with neutral colour palettes, exposed brick, or contrasting contemporary artwork.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster to avoid lifting delicate, flaking gilding. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent warping or gesso loss, and avoid liquid polishes or water on silver-leaf finishes.
