Carriage clocks originated in France during the 19th century as portable timepieces designed for travellers, officers, and the wealthy elite who required accurate timekeeping while on the move.

Traditional carriage clocks are constructed with heavy brass cases, bevelled glass panels to view the movement, white enamel dials with Roman numerals, and spring-driven mechanical movements.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-engraved cylinder or lever escapement movements, serial numbers stamped on the backplate, fire-gilt or polished brass cases, and original blued steel hands.

Place the clock as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or office desk to add a touch of industrial or classical elegance, contrasting well against contemporary minimalist furnishings.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, wind it gently at consistent intervals using the correct key, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every three to five years.
