FAQs

During the Victorian era, bedroom furniture evolved to become more matching and fitted, with bedside cabinets introduced to hold chamber pots and personal items out of sight before en-suite facilities were common.

These cabinets were typically constructed from solid mahogany, often featuring secondary timbers like pine or oak for drawer linings, and incorporated brass hardware and dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine patina on the timber, original brass or ceramic hardware, and traditional construction methods without modern fixings.

Pairing dark wood antique pieces with neutral walls and contemporary lighting creates a balanced scheme that highlights the rich timber tones while maintaining a functional bedroom layout.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight, keeping it away from heat sources to prevent cracking, and periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish the polished surface.
