Apothecary jars from the nineteenth century were utilised in pharmacies and dispensaries to store herbs, chemicals, and medicinal compounds safely, often featuring distinctive labels and coloured glass to protect contents from light degradation.

These vessels were typically hand-blown from coloured glass, featuring ground glass stoppers and acid-etched or hand-painted cartouches to denote the specific pharmaceutical contents.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit pontil marks on the base from hand-blowing, hand-ground stoppers tailored to the individual neck, and subtle imperfections or air bubbles within the glass matrix.

These objects function effectively as standalone decorative accents on open shelving, mantelpieces, or as part of a curated collection in a study or bathroom setting.

Clean antique glass gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or chemical solvents that could damage historic surface finishes or etched labels.
