This pair of Victorian baluster vases originates from Birmingham around 1850 and is made by Richardson Vitrified glass. The pieces are formed from white opaque glass finished with sepia-toned enamel decoration depicting classical Greek figures in togas wearing wreaths alongside fluted columns. Each vessel has a wide flared rim, a slender neck, and a bulbous body tapering down to a modest circular foot. The surface exhibits detailed figurative transfer work featuring historical attire and architectural elements in muted brown and sepia tones against a pale white background. Measuring 25 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, these items are signed by the maker. Today, such ornamental vases suit placement on a traditional mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a console table in a study or drawing room. They add classical Victorian character to interior spaces when displayed as a matched pair, pairing well with period furnishings or traditional mantel arrangements. Their neutral white and sepia palette coordinates easily with various neutral or rich interior colour schemes without dominating the surrounding decor.

Vitrified glass refers to glass that underwent specialised heat treatment and chemical processes to create an opaque, porcelain-like finish. Made famous by makers like Benjamin Richardson in Birmingham during the mid-19th century, it allowed manufacturers to apply delicate enamel and transfer designs reminiscent of classical pottery.

These vases were constructed using dense white or semi-translucent glass, often colored with bone ash or arsenic to achieve opacity. The surface decoration was typically executed using hand-painted enamels, sepia transfers, or gilding before undergoing a final firing to set the imagery.

Authentic pieces often feature printed or stamped maker marks on the base, such as Richardsons Vitrified or stencilled registration numbers. Additionally, genuine 1850s items display fine transfers, crisp classical figure painting, polished pontil marks, and subtle hand-gilded rim details.

Displaying a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece or console table creates a balanced focal point. Their neutral white hue and monochrome sepia artwork complement modern minimalist backgrounds as well as traditional, layered interior schemes.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild detergent with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding submersion if possible. Do not use abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents, as these can strip overglaze enamel decoration and gilded rim details.
