A penny lick is a small glass container historically used by street vendors in the nineteenth century to serve penny portions of ice cream to the working classes.

These pieces were typically made from heavy, durable lead or lime glass, often produced using pressed glass machinery or simple mould-blowing techniques to withstand frequent public use and washing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-specific characteristics such as rough pontil marks, minor surface wear, microscopic air bubbles, and slight irregularities inherent to nineteenth-century glassmaking.

Small antique glass items work effectively when displayed inside glass-fronted cabinets, styled on open shelving as part of a curated collection, or used as miniature vessels for single stems.

Historic glass should be washed strictly by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and abrasive materials to protect the delicate surface.
