Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Georgian furniture, spanning the reigns of the first four Georges from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber. Influenced by designers such as Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite, pieces from this era often feature refined carving, bracket feet, and elegant joinery.

Master cabinetmakers predominantly utilised imported Cuban and Honduran mahogany, alongside secondary softwoods like pine for internal framing. Construction relied heavily on hand-cut dovetail joints for drawers, mortise and tenon frames, and specialised mechanisms like tambour slides made from fine vertical wooden slats glued to canvas backings.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber grain, patination, and construction hallmarks such as hand-cut dovetailing and handmade brass hardware. Tambour tracks should move smoothly along recessed grooves, and secondary woods like oak or deal should show appropriate tool marks and age-related oxidisation.

Pairing period wooden furniture with contemporary neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and clean-lined upholstery creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic. The rich warmth of the timber adds textural contrast to modern spaces without overwhelming the room.

Maintain antique timber by avoiding direct sunlight and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent wood splitting. Clean surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the wood with traditional beeswax, avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
