Kidney-shaped forms gained prominence during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, often utilised as window seats or footstools designed to follow the curve of bay windows or to sit comfortably at the foot of a bed.

These pieces typically feature dense exotic hardwoods such as goncalo alves or mahogany, supported by turned wooden legs with brass castors, and traditionally stuffed with horsehair or coir beneath hessian webbing.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-turned components, traditional joinery methods, and the presence of hand-forged or brass hardware consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques.

An antique ottoman functions effectively as a low coffee table substitute when topped with a tray, or as an accent seating piece at the end of a bed, upholstered in a contrasting modern fabric to bridge historical and contemporary styles.

Maintain the timber with microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, avoid placing pieces in direct sunlight to prevent fading, and consult a professional conservator for traditional upholstery repairs.
