Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vargueno is a traditional Spanish portable writing desk and cabinet containing multiple internal drawers and compartments, historically supported on a trestle frame or turned stand.

These cabinets were typically constructed from dark woods such as walnut or chestnut, complemented by wrought iron stretchers and side handles, bone or ivory inlays, and gilded carved detailing.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-forged iron stretchers with arcaded scrollwork, hand-carved geometric or architectural drawer facades, dovetailed joints, and original wrought iron carrying handles.

A vargueno functions as a dramatic focal piece in an entryway, study, or living space, pairing well with neutral wall backdrops and contemporary art to highlight its historic woodwork.

Keep the cabinet in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources or moisture, and dust the gilded carved surfaces gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush without applying chemical liquids.
