Victorian engraved glassware flourished during the 19th century, driven by advancements in industrial manufacturing techniques alongside traditional hand-craftsmanship. Artisans utilised wheel-engraving and acid-etching to produce intricate botanical and geometric patterns on domestic vessels.

These items were typically made from lead crystal or flint glass, characterised by a high refractive index and clarity. The heavy metal content allowed for deep wheel-engraving without compromising the structural integrity of the vessel.

Authentic pieces often exhibit handmade characteristics such as pontil marks on the base, minor air bubbles within the glass matrix, and hand-cut facets with natural wear patinas. The weight is typically substantial due to the high lead content.

Such pieces function effectively as centrepieces on dining tables or sideboards, either left empty to highlight the reflective qualities of the glass or filled with seasonal botanicals and fruit. They complement both traditional period homes and contemporary minimalist spaces.

Antique glass should be washed strictly by hand using lukewarm water and mild, non-abrasive detergent. Harsh chemicals and sudden temperature changes must be avoided to prevent thermal shock and damage to the delicate engraved surfaces.
