Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in Britain during the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, which allowed for longer pendulums and heavier weights housed within a tall wooden case.

Traditional longcase clocks were predominantly constructed from native timbers such as oak, mahogany, walnut, and elm, often featuring brass dial faces, steel movements, and lead weights.

Authentication involves examining the movement for hand-cut brass gears, checking the timber for period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, and verifying the makers signature engraved on the dial.

An antique longcase clock functions effectively as a focal point in hallways, living rooms, or studies, contrasting traditional woodwork against neutral walls or pairing with contemporary minimalist furniture to create visual depth.

Preservation requires maintaining a stable indoor environment away from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations, winding the movement carefully according to its specific mechanism, and having the movement professionally serviced every few years.
