French opaline glass gained immense popularity during the Restoration and Napoleon III periods, renowned for its opaque, pastel, and white hues resembling precious opal. Often retailed in high-end boutiques around the Palais Royal in Paris, these pieces served as luxury souvenirs and vanity items for the affluent elite.

These items are crafted from blown opaline glass, characterised by its dense, milky opacity achieved through bone ash or other agents. The glass is mounted in finely cast, fire-gilded brass known as ormolu, often featuring hinged lids and decorative filigree borders.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-blown glass characteristics such as pontil marks on the base, minor air bubbles, and slight asymmetry. The ormolu mounts should display crisp, detailed chasing and genuine mercury or fire gilding with appropriate age-related wear, rather than modern electroplating.

This type of decorative object adds a touch of historical refinement when placed on a dressing table, mantlepiece, or display cabinet. Its reflective glass and metallic ormolu elements contrast well against clean modern surfaces or sit comfortably within eclectic and maximalist schemes.

Clean the glass gently using a soft cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage the surface. The ormolu mounts should be dusted dry with a soft brush, taking care not to let moisture seep between the glass and metal components.
