Remarkable Carved Oak And Inlaid Wall Cupboard Dated 1763
£1,985 $2,543 €2,411
This extraordinary cupboard is unlike any wall cupboard we have ever seen before. Its` construction suggests it was made by someone familiar with clock case production. The cornice and scroll pediment, embellished with arcaded detail and chip carving, are made from a single piece of timber, the arched centre surrounding a cherub with outspread wings holding a shield initialled IDC and dated 1763.
The arched, fielded-panel door below is carved with an inlaid lozenge-shaped fielded panel and encloses two shelves and two small drawers. There are two fluted tapering columns with ionic capitals and chip-carved bases.
The pine backboards are old but not original.
