Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower weights within a tall wooden case.

Traditional longcase clocks feature cases crafted from timbers such as oak, walnut, mahogany, and sometimes exotic veneers like marquetry or japanised finishes, housing brass or iron mechanical movements with painted or engraved brass dials.

Authentic pieces are identified by hand-cut brass gears, matching serial or maker numbers on the movement and dial, patination appropriate to the age of the wood, and traditional joint construction rather than modern fixings.

Positioning a longcase clock in a hallway, living room, or study introduces vertical architectural presence, contrasting traditional woodwork against clean contemporary walls and minimalist furnishings.

Maintain a stable room temperature away from direct sunlight and moisture, dust the timber gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years to ensure longevity.
