A six-plank coffer is one of the earliest forms of wooden storage furniture, constructed simply from six distinct boards pinned together with wooden pegs. Historically used in domestic and ecclesiastical settings, these chests secured valuables, documents, and textiles.

These pieces are traditionally fashioned from native English oak, joined using butt joints secured by wooden treen nails or iron nails, and frequently fitted with hand-wrought iron hinges and strap locks.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery marks, ironwork oxidisation, and the wear patterns on the feet and lid edges, which reflect centuries of physical use.

An antique coffer provides textural contrast and functional storage, working effectively as a coffee table substitute in a living room or placed at the foot of a bed for linens.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the dry timber without sealing the surface.
