Description

17th Century Period Oak Antique Grain Ark from Snowdonia

This is a wonderful, so very original Welsh early 17th century antique grain ark, made in solid oak which is a fabulous colour, a design made to come apart for ease of occasional cleaning. These Welsh early period oak antique chests were used to store cornmeal, the domed ark top lifts off and were used as large troughs to transfer the cornmeal to the grinding wheel or kitchen. This is a superb example that has a five fielded panel front with panelled sides, made to come apart with large oak pegs. Originally from North Wales in Snowdonia and dates to around 1640. Ideal for log storage or outdoor gear that is only needed occasionally. A wonderful thing.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Pegged tusk tenons at the frame joints: traditional knock-down construction for easy dismantling.
Hand-hewn oak panels with raised fields: seventeenth-century regional joinery techniques.
Surface-mounted iron lockplate with blacksmith hammer marks: early hand-forged hardware.
Dark oxidised wood inside the trough lid: centuries of natural exposure.
Old scratch-carved owner initials on the lid: personal markings from early domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This seventeenth-century Welsh vernacular grain ark originates from Snowdonia and follows a traditional farmhouse design. Made from solid oak with a dark brown timber finish, the piece features a gabled lid, a five fielded panel front with moulded panels, peg joinery, and an iron lockplate. The dark wood shows distinct signs of age and authentic wear on the surface, complemented by small protruding peg details and straight wooden corner posts. Standing 121 cm high, 122 cm wide and 81 cm deep, the construction allows the domed ark top to lift off for practical storage. In a modern home, this traditional chest is ideally placed in a hallway or utility room, serving as a functional repository for logs or outdoor gear. The rustic construction and sturdy wooden frame suit period interiors and country settings alike, providing deep enclosed storage for items that are only needed occasionally. The authentic historic build preserves the character of early Welsh furniture while offering robust everyday utility.

A grain ark is a specific regional form of wooden storage chest, traditionally crafted in rural western Britain during the seventeenth century for storing milled flour or grain. These pieces feature robust joinery, panelled sections, and a gabled or rounded lid designed to keep agricultural yield dry and protected from pests.

These chests were constructed from thick native oak utilizing hand-planed mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden trunnels or pegs. Hand-forged iron fittings, including lockplates, strap hinges, and structural brackets, provided additional security and strength.

Authentic seventeenth-century pieces exhibit hand-tooling signs, such as adze marks on unexposed rear or interior surfaces, and peg construction rather than modern screws. Look for deep, uneven oxidisation in the timber, natural contraction splits, and historic hand-carved initials or dates.

A large oak ark functions effectively as a statement console or storage piece in an entryway, hallway, or living room. Setting the dark, textured timber against minimalist architecture, neutral linen upholstery, or contemporary artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craft and modern design.

Preserve the original finish by applying a thin layer of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently along the direction of the grain. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking, warping, or excessive wood movement.
