Antique Porcelain Figurine/vase Planter by Ernst Wahliss, Teplitz-turn, Austria, C. 1897

Antique, rare, hand-painted porcelain figurine of a girl created in the Art Nouveau style by Ernst Wahliss in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia, Austria (now Trnovany, Czech Republic). The girl, dressed in a Victorian pink dress and hat, stands on a stepped pedestal. At her feet, there is a broken branch with fruit, and her gaze is directed upwards as if she has noticed something intriguing.

The surface of the pedestal, part of her headdress, the collar of her dress, and other details are decorated in an unusual way, resembling gold dust. Tiny gold dots, visible only under a magnifying glass, create a voluminous, glittering effect. The figure is exemplary of the quality associated with Ernst Wahliss' works, with naturalistic attention to detail, especially in the facial expression.

On the bottom is a slightly discolored blue mark featuring a crown and the inscription: “Depose/EW/Turn Wien/Made in Austria”, dating this piece to the late 19th century.

Functionally, this figurine could serve as a small vase planter.

Ernst Wahliss (1836–1900) was a leading Vienna retailer of porcelain and ceramic goods. His Vienna store, established in 1863, became highly successful, allowing him to open other stores across major European cities, including London, and supply high-quality ceramics to European royal families.

In 1894, Ernst Wahliss took over the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz, renaming it Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik. The factory produced a large variety of goods and received numerous awards at exhibitions. After Ernst’s death in 1900, his sons, Hans and Erich, acquired 600 molds from the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna and began producing reproductions of Vienna porcelain. The company was renamed Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss in 1905. Gerhard Martin Wahliss acquired the factory in 1907. The factory focused on faience production by 1910, but it temporarily closed during World War I. In 1921, it became part of Porzellanfabrik Union AG, and production ceased in 1929. Works by Ernst Wahliss are held in museums worldwide.

Condition: A small dot of paint under the nose (production defect), two chipped finger tips on the right hand, and some gold paint on the lower part of the dress. Otherwise, everything is in good condition.
