Six Antique Scottish Opaque Twist Wine Glasses C1850

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Technical Description

A superb set of six mid-19th century opaque twist wine glasses.

They have conical bowls with an annulated shoulder knops. They sit on thin double series opaque twist stems and conical feet with polished pontils.

The form, which is very distinctive, with the shoulder knop and very thin stem is attributed to the Edinburgh and Leith Glassworks in the first half of the 19th century.

We've had very few of these glasses over the years, but this is the very first time we have had or seen and complete set of six. They are for the era in which they were made, wine glasses, however, today, based on the size of the bowl, we are more likely to classify them as port or sherry glasses.

A magnificent period set all in original condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Opaque twist wine glasses feature intricate decorative white enamel canes embedded inside the clear glass stem, a technique popularised in Britain during the mid-to-late 18th century and reproduced through the 19th century.

Craftsmen created these stems by inserting opaque white enamel rods into a cylindrical mould, filling it with clear molten glass, and subsequently drawing and twisting the billet to create spiralling internal patterns before attaching the bowl and foot.

Authentic antique pieces display slight asymmetry, evidence of a pontil mark on the base, minor air bubbles within the glass, and natural wear patterns on the underside of the conical foot where it rests on surfaces.

These glasses make a refined addition when displayed inside a glazed cabinet, arranged on a brass drinks trolley, or integrated into a formal table setting to contrast contemporary dinnerware.

Always wash antique stemware by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent, avoiding dishwasher use, thermal shock from extreme temperature changes, and abrasive cloths that could scratch the surface.
