This rare sixteenth-century Tudor and Elizabethan coffer is constructed from solid oak with a dark brown finish. The front panels display intricate geometric star marquetry inlay enclosed within diamond reserves, accented by small flower motifs and contrasting bog oak details. A prominent hand-forged iron lockplate and clasp are centrally mounted on the upper front edge, accompanied by visible iron hinges and mounting nails. The chest rests securely on traditional slab side support feet, and displays genuine age-related surface wear and patination across the timber surfaces. Measuring 51 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, this small antique storage chest provides practical proportions for functional use. It suits placement as an accent piece in a traditional hallway, living room, or bedroom interior, where it serves effectively for storing linens, blankets, or keepsakes while adding historical character to modern living spaces.

A 16th-century inlaid oak coffer is characterised by timber construction, joined or plank framing, and geometric marquetry or parquetry inlays such as star patterns. These storage chests were produced during the Tudor and Elizabethan periods for securing personal belongings.

Early coffers were crafted from solid English oak using plank construction or mortise and tenon joinery. Decorative inlays utilized contrasting timbers such as bog oak, holly, or fruitwood, accompanied by hand-forged iron lockplates and hinges.

Authentic period coffers display hand-planed wood surfaces, pegged joints, and natural timber shrinkage across the grain. The ironwork shows hand-forged irregularities, while internal surfaces exhibit hand-sawing marks rather than modern machine cuts.

An oak coffer can be placed at the foot of a bed, used in an entryway for concealed storage, or set along a hallway wall. The dark timber and geometric inlay balance minimalist space with historic detail.

Early oak furniture should be kept in stable humidity to prevent timber movement and cracking. Regular dusting with a dry cloth and periodic application of clear beeswax preserves the patinated surface.
