Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese earthenware originating from Satsuma Province in Kyushu, traditionally characterised by an ivory-coloured, cracked glaze and intricate polychrome and gilt enamel decoration, particularly flourishing during the Meiji period.

Authentic pieces are crafted from local clay with a finely crazed transparent glaze, then hand-painted using mineral pigments and heavy gold leaf detailing, often fired multiple times to set the enamels.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the fineness of the crackle glaze, the weight and texture of the earthenware body, and the presence of artist seals or signatures painted on the base in gold or black enamel.

Place the piece as a standalone focal point on a dark wood console or mantelpiece where its intricate gilding and detailed floral motifs can be fully appreciated against a neutral backdrop.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent further crazing or damage to the delicate gold leaf, dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding water immersion.
