FAQs

An early oak food cupboard is a traditional utilitarian storage piece used in historical households to store perishables before the advent of refrigeration, often featuring ventilated panels.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods like English oak, utilizing pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed boards, and forged iron hardware.

Authenticity is assessed by examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, oxidation patterns, handmade iron hinges, and the structural integrity of the joinery consistent with historical periods.

This piece works well as a textural contrast in contemporary or transitional spaces, functioning as a practical storage cabinet in kitchens, dining rooms, or hallways.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber without sealing it.
