An armada chest is a heavy wrought-iron strongbox predominantly produced in Northern European centres such as Nuremberg during the 16th and 17th centuries. The name was popularised in Britain following a historical association with treasure chests captured from the Spanish Armada.

These strongboxes were crafted from heavy iron plates or metal-strapped timber, reinforced with hand-forged studs and rivets. They feature complex spring-driven multi-bolt locking mechanisms concealed entirely within the underside of the lid.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-hammered iron strapping, deliberate false keyholes on the front face, side lifting handles, and intricate internal locking works operated by a single key inserted through the lid top.
