FAQs

Bedside cabinets, often called nightstands or bedside cupboards, became common in European bedrooms during the 18th and 19th centuries. The addition of marble tops provided a durable, hygienic surface for washing basins and nighttime water pitchers before indoor plumbing was standard.

Authentic period cabinets typically feature solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, often paired with inset marble slabs. Construction methods frequently include hand-cut dovetail joints in drawers, mortise and tenon frames, and hand-carved decorative motifs.

Authentication involves examining joinery for hand-tool marks, checking for uniformity in screw types (such as hand-turned or early slotted screws), inspecting the timber for natural shrinkage and ageing, and verifying the presence of period-appropriate brass or bronze hardware.

These cabinets serve as character-rich focal points in contemporary bedrooms, adding textural contrast and historical depth. They pair effectively with minimalist beds, neutral linens, and modern ceramic lamps to create a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent wood cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and periodic application of microcrystalline wax help protect the finish without sealing moisture into the grain.
