FAQs

Victorian glassware is characterised by exuberant ornamentation, heavy use of vibrant colours such as ruby red, cobalt blue, and emerald green, and intricate wheel-cut or cased glass techniques that reflected the industrial and artistic advancements of the 19th century.

These sets typically feature lead crystal or flint glass shaped by free-blowing or mould-blowing, often cased with a layer of coloured glass before being hand-cut to reveal the clear glass beneath. Stands were crafted from durable timbers like rosewood or mahogany to support the weight of the bottles.

Authentication relies on examining the pontil mark on the base of the decanters, hand-cut facets with slight irregularities, wear consistent with age on the base and stoppers, and the specific density and composition of nineteenth-century lead crystal.

Such pieces can be displayed prominently on a sideboard or serving cart to add a focal point of rich colour and texture, contrasting effectively against minimalist or modern architectural backdrops.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent cracking. Wooden stands require occasional treatment with suitable furniture wax to maintain the grain and prevent drying.
