FAQs

Faux marble finishing, or marbling, is a decorative painting technique used to simulate real stone on wood or plaster surfaces. This technique gained significant popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras as a way to achieve a luxurious neoclassical look without the high cost of solid marble.

These items are typically constructed from a wooden carcass, such as pine or softwood, meticulously prepared and layered with gesso or paint. Artisans used specialised bristle brushes and feathers to apply oil-based glazes, successfully replicating the intricate veining and mineral patterns of natural stones like Carrara or Verde antique.

Authenticity is determined by examining the underlying timber, hand-mixed oil paints, and natural age-related crazing or patination. Genuine period pieces often exhibit subtle wear patterns, hand-planed internal construction, and authentic historical hardware consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

This versatile piece serves well as a striking bedside table or an occasional stand in a living space, providing a sculptural focal point. Pairing it with minimalist modern lamps or sleek accessories highlights the trompe loeil finish while maintaining a balanced, sophisticated aesthetic.

Painted and faux-finished surfaces require gentle maintenance using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical solvents, abrasive cleaners, and excessive moisture, and protect the surface from direct sunlight to prevent fading or damage to the delicate glaze.
