A very rare Victorian engraved gilt-brass striking strut clock by Thomas Cole, London, retailed by C.F. Hancock, London, circa 1845. The silvered dial is profusely engraved with foliage, and within the chapter ring it bears a monogram of a W with a crown above. We are still researching which duke, baroness, or member of the royal family this may have belonged to. The crown looks to be more of a duke’s crown of the period - more information will be following shortly. Blued steel fleur-de-lys hands, the centre engraved with an urn overflowing with fruit within a floral galrand, all within a foliate engraved gilt frame, the two-train movement with separate backplates to each train, the going train with spring barrel and five wheel train with five crossings and lever escapement with cut bimetallic balance with gold timing screws, the strike train with spring barrel and single hammer striking the hour on a gong, the foliate engraved case, the backplate with folding winding handles and shutt...er to the escapement and engraved by the retailer, with easel stand, and swivel stand in the base, together with the original brown leather travelling case with dark red velvet lining.
