John Walker of Newcastle Longcase Clock Simply Stunning Clock

18th century
Description

Hi

I have for sale a simply stunning original solid flame mahogany eight day long case clock made by John Walker when he was based in Newcastle, he made clocks mainly in London.

This was online about John...

The competition for a clockmaker in London must have been very strong at that time because John chose to move to Newcastle about 1752 -53. He was definitely in the town by 1754 when he advertised his presence in the Newcastle Journal from 15th June 1754 as follows :-

“John Walker, clock and watch maker from London at the Crown and Dial in the Close, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Makes, Mends and Sells, all sorts of Clocks and watches at reasonable rates; viz Chime Clocks with either Weights or Springs, keeping such regular time that no defect can be observed by the most Curious; Likewise Spring or Weight Quarter Clocks to strike the Hours and Quarters going upon 9 or 13 bells, with changes (and when pull’d) will repeat the last Hour and Quarters even to a second of time, if required. Also repeating Spring Clocks to strike the Hours at the due Time and their Hours and Quarters upon 7,9 or 13 bells (when pull’d). Also Silent Spring Clocks (only when pull’d) will strike the Hour and repeat, with the Cylinder Motion. Also makes and sells Weight 8 day Clocks to repeat the Hour, with the Sun’s Motion and the Increase and Decrease of days, with the Moon’s motion, and Time of High Water and the perpetual Month; Makes Regulators for Clock and Watchmakers with the Compound Pendulum; with several other mechanical Motions, performed in the newest methods not here mentioned.”

This advertisement demonstrates the wide range of clocks and watches John Walker could supply to his customers. It is not surprising that he soon had a very successful business in an up-market part of the town. John married Jane Elliot in 1756 and John junior was born in 1763.

This clock is offered for sale fully restored around two months ago, the case has been cut and polished , and the movement fully re-built with new gut line , a stunning clock ready to see the next 100 years of events unfold.

Around Christmas time and the new year a grandfather clock seems to be very fitting sounding in the new year as it has for the last 200 years.

The Case

The case is in English flame mahogany with an opening front door and rare side glass windows she stands 226cm high (to the top of the hood) x 45cm widest point at the base with a depth of 25cm it is in very good original condition well waxed and loved over the years with the most stunning inlays you will ever see it is a stunning piece of furniture.

It is a very nice looking piece of furniture that would grace any home and as I mentioned just cut and polished and please note the inlays which sets it apart from others and screams quality.

The Dial

The dial is in very good original condition with a full working date work and signed in the middle and has a strike / silent function, signed by John.

The Movement

The movement is eight day time and strike, which strikes the hours on each hour.

The movement is a mega heavy thick plated movement of top quality.

This movement was cleaned hand polished then new gut lines added oiled tested so runs great for eight days striking the hours with a full working date wheel, the hands are solid blued steel and in original condition.

Overall a beautiful clock quite rare in this original condition with the famous maker that looks stunning in the hallway a genuine early long case clock.

The photographs do not do this clock any justice it looks better in the flesh you will not be disappointed.

I purchased this clock from the last owners so fresh to the market after 38 years, and has the original key.

Please email me for delivery cost this will be hand delivered not posted.
