Early Nineteenth Century Cabriole Leg Stool

19th century
Description

For sale, this fine quality early 19th century stool standing on especially elegant cabriole legs. The colour and patina is very nice, the upholstery and webbing is all aged but still in good order, but the great thing about this stool is the construction. The frame which is usually beech, oak or even pine, is made of the finest mahogany and it even has correct period corner stretchers. A very fine piece indeed and worn out just enough for that perfectly inherited look.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cabriole leg stool features S-shaped curved legs that arch outwards at the knee and taper inwards towards the foot. Popularised during the 18th and early 19th centuries, this style draws influence from French Rococo and English Chippendale designs, combining decorative elegance with low-level functional seating.

Frames were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood to support the weight on slender curved legs. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural webbing, horsehair padding, and outer fabrics like silk, wool tapestry, or cotton velvet secured with decorative braid or brass tacks.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery details, natural timber oxidisation on unpolished undersides, and hand-cut mortise and tenon joints. Original frames may show slight asymmetry from manual shaping and wear patterns consistent with historical usage along the lower feet.

These versatile pieces function well as footrests paired with modern armchairs, extra seating beside a hearth, or decorative accents at the foot of a bed. Integrating historical woodwork into contemporary rooms introduces texture and visual contrast without overwhelming the space.

Dust wooden components regularly with a soft cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood finish. Vacuum fabric gently with an upholstery attachment, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping and textile fading.
