Imari porcelain is a style of Japanese export ceramic produced in the Arita area of Hizen province. Named after the port of Imari from which it was shipped, it gained international popularity in the 17th to 19th centuries and is characterized by cobalt blue underglaze and iron-red enamel overglaze decoration.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from high-fired porcelain clay. The design process involves painting cobalt blue decoration onto the unfired body, applying a clear glaze, firing at high temperatures, and subsequently painting iron-red enamels and gilt accents before a secondary low-temperature firing.

Authentic 19th-century Imari pieces display a dense palette of deep cobalt blue and rust-red enamels, often accompanied by gilded highlights. Look for uneven base rims, slight firing imperfections in the paste, hand-painted asymmetry in the foliage or scrollwork, and sculpted covers featuring traditional motifs such as shishi lions.
