Pair of Richardsons of Stourbridge White Opaline, Mouth-blown, Snake-handled Glass Ewers

19th century
Description

This is a scarce pair of Richardsons of Stourbridge white opaline, mouth-blown, snake-handled glass ewers dating from the middle of the 19th century, c1850.

The ewers are in excellent condition for their age. This means of course that they show age related wear and tear to the rims of the bases consistent with some 170 years of use.

The ewers have baluster-shaped bodies measuring 11 cm (4.4 inches) in diameter at their widest points. The ewers have been blown in white opaline glass decorated on the inside of the pouring spout with gilded flora. The pouring rims and tops of the feet are also gilded. The ewers end in bases that measures 8.2 cm (3.3 inches) in diameter and bear polished out pontil marks. The ewers are 32 cm (13 inches) in height. The applied handles were first applied to the necks and then followed a serpentine route around the necks and shoulders, finishing off half way down the bodies. The handles are gilded with scales to replicate snake skin and the tops of the handles have been gilded with snake heads, complete with forked tongues. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. There is a Christies sticker on the underside of one of the bases.

A scarce pair of ewers with each weighing in at 1.1 kg. (~ 2 lb. 7 oz.).

Provenance: from the collection of John and Poppy Stallebrass; previously at Christies, lot 167

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
