Originating in the historic region of Bohemia during the nineteenth century, overlay or cased glass became celebrated across Europe for its high level of craftsmanship. Glassmakers fused multiple layers of coloured and opaque glass, using lapidary cut-to-clear techniques to create intricate contrast.

Artisans gathered a layer of clear or coloured glass, such as ruby or cobalt, and encased it within one or more outer layers of opaque white or contrasting glass.
