A mule chest is a traditional wooden storage vessel combining a hinged top lid with one or more drawers constructed into the lower section. Originating in the late 17th century and popular throughout the 18th century, it served as an evolutionary design step between the classic coffer and the chest of drawers.

These chests were primarily crafted from solid native timbers such as English oak, pine, or elm. Construction featured hand-sawn timber, joinery secured with wooden pegs, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery with irregular dovetails inside the drawers, wooden peg fastenings, and original hand-sawn tool marks on unpolished rear and underside surfaces. Look for fielded front panels, historical brass escutcheons, and natural surface wear around the base.
