Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large 18th-century Georgian mule chest is constructed from dark brown oak with brass and iron hardware. The piece presents a rectangular silhouette featuring a hinged top above a panelled front with three fielded panels, complemented by two short drawers over one long drawer below. Details include decorative brass escutcheons around keyholes, ornate brass drop handles on the drawers, and raised moulding profiles on the panel framing. Practical dimensions measure 92 cm high, 137 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Positioned in an entrance hall, bedroom, or living room, this chest provides functional storage space for blankets, linens, or household items while serving as a sturdy surface for decorative objects or lamps. The solid timber construction ensures durability for daily use in a traditional or modern interior setting, bringing historic character and ample storage capacity to domestic environments.

FAQs

A mule chest is a traditional wooden storage vessel combining a hinged top lid with one or more drawers constructed into the lower section. Originating in the late 17th century and popular throughout the 18th century, it served as an evolutionary design step between the classic coffer and the chest of drawers.

These chests were primarily crafted from solid native timbers such as English oak, pine, or elm. Construction featured hand-sawn timber, joinery secured with wooden pegs, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery with irregular dovetails inside the drawers, wooden peg fastenings, and original hand-sawn tool marks on unpolished rear and underside surfaces. Look for fielded front panels, historical brass escutcheons, and natural surface wear around the base.

Position a mule chest in an entrance hall, landing, or at the foot of a bed to add weight and historical depth to a room scheme. Its rich timber tone contrasts effectively with modern neutral walls, textured stone, or contemporary lighting fixtures.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers patina. Keep the piece clear of direct heat sources, radiators, and damp conditions to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
