Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese earthenware originating from Satsuma Province in Kyushu, characterized by an ivory-coloured crackle glaze and elaborate overglaze enamel and gilt decoration, which gained significant popularity during the Meiji period for export markets.

Traditional Satsuma pieces are fashioned from local clay, fired to an earthenware or stoneware body, coated with a finely crackled transparent glaze, and meticulously hand-painted with mineral pigments and raised gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces typically feature finely crazed cream-coloured glazes, dense hand-painted polychrome and gilt motifs depicting figural scenes or nature, and hand-painted or impressed maker marks on the underside.

An antique Satsuma vessel functions effectively as a focal point on a credenza, mantelpiece, or open bookshelf, contrasting against neutral surfaces to highlight its intricate surface patterns and gilded details.

Antique ceramics should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush and kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to protect the delicate enamel and gold leaf from deterioration.
