Large Striking Fusee English Drop-dial Wall Clock by Barrauds, Conrnhill, London. circa 1835

19th century
Description

This beautiful and large clock by very good makers is full of character and in superb condition.

The substantial, 4 pillar, double fusee movement has an Anchor Recoil escapement with a long pendulum, rectangular plates, rack striking the hours on a rear-mounted bell and a counterpoising weight to the arbored minute wheel.

It has a 16" diameter, well-executed, bowed painted iron dial with a lovely cream coloured background. Having a divided outer minute track with triangle hour marks and inner, bold Roman hour numerals. Above centre bears the maker's name of "BARRAUDS, Cornhill, LONDON". The blackened steel hands have a spade end to the hour. The cast brass hinged and locking bezel has a high domed glass fitted.

The fine mahogany case has a narrow one-piece bezel surround that sits above the 'drop'. The trunk front has a figured and recessed panel with quarter round moulding that contours the dial surround. It is flanked with narrow shaped ears and is divided from the quarter rounded bottom by a returned moulding. The bottom has a curved locking door that is framed with quarter round, cast brass moulding. The straight sides have upper access doors.

Barrauds was founded by the eminent chronometer maker Paul Philip Barraud at Cornhill, London C.1795. After his death his two sons ran the company hence "Barrauds". They changed their name to Barraud & Lunds in 1838 when John Richard Lund became a partner and the company finally closed in 1929. During their time, they were celebrated makers. This is a very attractive yet practical example of their work and would enhance any wall.

Dimensions: 29" high x 19" wide x 8 1/2" deep to the glass high point.

Condition: The movement is in good working order but as always, would benefit from an overhaul, which has not yet been carried out. The case is in excellent condition, good colour and patina and some scuffs due to hand-setting over the years. A particular feature of the dial is a shadow of the hour hand between the hours of V and VI. This would have been caused by sunlight over many years with the clock not running for whatever reason and adds greatly to the charm. I would not advocate removing this shadow.

Price: The price is for the clock with the movement overhauled and guaranteed however, it can be purchased for considerably less in just 'working order'. Further details and timescales can be supplied upon enquiry.
