Nineteenth-century French glassware often incorporates delicate hand-applied gilding, mould-blown techniques, and intricate floral motifs reflecting the artistic sensibilities of the period.

Traditional methods typically involved free-blowing or mould-blowing clear glass, followed by manual hand-painting with metallic gold enamels that were subsequently fired to ensure adhesion.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit subtle irregularities from manual manufacture, genuine wear to the gold leaf or enamel consistent with age, and distinct pontil marks on the base.

These pieces can be displayed singly or as a pair on mantelpieces, open shelving, or side tables, allowing light to pass through the clear glass and highlight the metallic detailing.

Antique glass with applied gilding should be cleaned exclusively with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or abrasive scrubbing to protect the fragile surface decoration.
