Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Rough pontil scar on the base: hand-blown glass technique of the period.
Reverse-painted cartouche with gilt lettering: standard Victorian chemist shopfitting design.
Natural flaking to the blue paint layer: typical ageing of early adhesives.
Original hollow blown glass cover: gilded finish matching the period style.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian apothecary jar and cover takes the form of a clear glass cylindrical body topped with a domed brass lid. Dating from circa 1880, the piece exhibits a reverse-glass gilded label shaped as an ornate scrollwork cartouche in blue, green, and red enamel with gold accents, reading "GELATINE" through the centre. Visible details include wear to the blue ground within the cartouche, along with a good pontil mark to the base and a bright, glowing finish on the lid. The glass jar stands 28.5 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. In a home today, this piece works well displayed on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study.

During the nineteenth century, apothecaries and pharmacists used glass jars to store dry herbs, chemicals, and pharmaceutical preparations. Jars crafted for shop counter display often featured decorative gilded cartouches and reverse-painted glass labels to identify contents clearly to customers.

Victorian apothecary jars were primarily constructed from clear or amber mouth-blown glass, fitted with ground glass stoppers or stamped brass covers. Decorative labels were commonly applied using gold leaf gilding, oil enamels, or under-glass painted transfers.

Authentic pieces typically show hand-blown glass features such as minor air bubbles, slight asymmetrical thickness, pontil scars on the base, and age-appropriate surface wear. Genuine labels often exhibit fine crazing or minor paint loss consistent with historical shop use.

Apothecary jars serve as striking decorative objects when placed on library shelving, bathroom counters, or kitchen sideboards. Grouping vessels of varying heights creates an engaging display that adds historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Clean glass surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding direct contact with painted or gilded exterior labels. Water and chemical solvents should not be applied over delicate reverse-painted glass or gold leaf details to prevent peeling and oxidisation.
