The George III period in silverwork spans from 1760 to 1820, characterised by a transition from ornate Rococo curves to the classical restraint and symmetry of the Neoclassical and Regency styles, often featuring crisp architectural moulding and classical motifs.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver and then subjected to fire gilding or vermeil, a process where a thin layer of gold was amalgamated with mercury and applied to the silver base using heat to create a rich, durable golden finish.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks stamped directly into the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling quality, a town mark such as the London leopards head, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of assay.

An antique silver gilt vessel can be displayed as a focal point on a credenza, console table, or open shelving unit, providing a reflective metallic contrast that complements both contemporary minimalist spaces and layered traditional rooms.

Silver gilt should be cleaned very sparingly using a soft, lint-free cloth and mild soapy water, avoiding harsh silver dips or abrasive polishes which can strip away the delicate gold layer over time.
